"At one point we considered switching lab providers, but then we found out the new lab didn’t offer Shadowbox. Needless to say, that was the end of that discussion."

Jonathan, A., Executive, Multi-site Intensive Outpatient Treatment Center

How it started

What if you could instantly connect all your applications? What if you could access multiple apps, files, tools, and websites as easily as opening a browser, link them, share data across them and connect them seamlessly, without any code? Would it change the world?

Preamble

Here at Shadowbox, we are geeked-out fans of superheroes. From Iron Man to Captain America, no one has an origin story quite like an Avenger. While founder and CEO, Greg Stein, may not have been bitten by a radioactive spider, he and our company are fueled by the goal of revolutionizing healthcare to help save lives.

If you’ve received care from more than one doctor across more than one provider or health system, then you’ve likely experienced the challenge of receiving care from a doctor that didn’t have the benefit of your full health history at their fingertips. Your health provider may not have access to your latest diagnosis codes, medications, lab test results, family history, or current insurance information.

You aren’t alone. The truth is, real-time healthcare data exchange remains one of the biggest and most complicated challenges yet to be solved, with the result being billions of dollars in unnecessary administrative cost, billions more in lost productivity, medical errors, and misdiagnosis that cause real harm, and hundreds of millions of angry and frustrated patients and their families.

At Shadowbox, we are working to solve this challenge. Our mission is to elevate patient care by making data easy to access and safe to share, no matter where it resides.

2016

Before Shadowbox

Prior to founding Shadowbox, Greg worked as a Strategy VP for a large diagnostic laboratory. The lab faced incredible challenges and costs related to accessing critical patient information siloed in multiple electronic health record ("EHR") systems used by our clinician customers.

Healthcare workflow solutions were inefficient and expensive, often costing more to implement than most labs could ultimately recover in revenue. Greg’s lab received thousands of paper orders via fax every day, resulting in millions of dollars in insurance claim denials due to missing or incorrect billing information. It was such a big problem that the lab hired a room full of data-entry clerks dedicated to chasing incomplete patient information, correcting clerical errors, and negotiating denied claims with payers, typically recovering pennies on the dollar.

2017

The problem

The diagnostic lab was far from alone in their struggle to access and automate patient data exchange. According to the CAQH Index, the US Healthcare industry spends over $390B per year on administrative complexity. One-in-7 insurance claims are initially denied by insurance payers due to missing or incorrect information. Failed solutions and denied claims were costing labs upwards of $20B. That's billion, with a "B." Healthcare automation options are so costly and challenging that 9-out-of-10 doctors still use their fax machines. There had to be a better way!

Born out of a need

In early 2017, Greg met a team of engineers who showed him a unique multi-view integration platform with the capability to simultaneously access multiple applications. Their solution allowed the end-user to connect multiple web applications, share data across them, and automate repetitive tasks. While the platform was originally built with the entertainment industry in mind, Greg had a different idea for the technology. What if you applied the multi-view integration platform to healthcare? Could it solve the multi-billion-dollar problem he and every healthcare service provider experiences?

Working with a small team of developers, they created a technology platform with the promise of unlocking patient data in a cost-effective, secure, and automated way. The result is Shadowbox.

Greg incorporated Shadowbox in late 2017.

The Launch

The Shadowbox team identified a diagnostic lab willing to work with us to test our minimum viable product (“MVP”) in late 2018. Crowded into a tiny back office at one of the lab’s clinic customers, the Shadowbox team installed the first-ever Shadowbox application.

It took about 5 minutes to install and set up the user account. The Medical Assistant immediately said, "This is amazing! It looks just like the paper form I've been using, but it's already filled out, so I don't have to enter the data manually."

2019

The patent

In the year that followed, Greg and the team set about proving product-market fit. They knew a few things:

  1. Automation presented a multi-billion-dollar problem in healthcare.
  2. Shadowbox could automate workflow ACROSS healthcare providers in an entirely new way that was fast, cost-effective and simple; and
  3. No other company had a solution like Shadowbox.

In concert with their go-to-market efforts, Shadowbox won its first patent in August 2019.

The company also welcomed Brian Hood, current VP of Product, and Beth Crocker, Chief Financial Officer. Brian would go on to establish a far more robust product and platform and build the Customer Success function to put our customers first. And Beth would raise millions in capital and professionalize the back office to bring the company to scale.

Getting it right

Shadowbox introduced a new, easy, and cost-effective way to increase efficiency and profitability for lab customers and improve the working lives of the people on the front lines of patient care. At no time was the value more evident than when COVID hit and put information exchange to the test. The status-quo healthcare automation solutions proved antiquated and inadequate, with providers relying heavily on paper, fax machines and document scanning. The result was a massive bottleneck in receiving lab orders and providing lab results. As hundreds of labs pivoted to bring COVID testing online, Shadowbox offered a new solution to automate lab workflow and manage testing capacity across the healthcare ecosystem.

Shadowbox filled a huge gap in the healthcare market, significantly growing our customer base and expanding to other healthcare services such as addiction and treatment, and durable medical equipment. The company grew to serve tens of thousands of patients monthly through connectivity solutions.

Bringing downstream functions to “time of order”

As the Shadowbox customer base expanded, customers requested additional functionality, including patient insurance eligibility and curation, prior authorization, patient responsibility estimation, and patient collection of co-pays, deductibles, and cash pay to the time of order. Shadowbox not only connects these services but moves them to the time of order removing the friction that otherwise takes place after the service is provided but before payment is received. By correcting inaccurate data and identifying missing information before the service is rendered, these applications could dramatically reduce claim denials by payors and the costs of appeals. Shadowbox initiated strategic partner relationships with 3rd party vendors to bring their services to time of order with incredible results for their mutual customers.

The Company also welcomed Emily Deere, EVP, Engineering, bringing over 30 years of tech experience and a deep bench of developers to Shadowbox. Emily enhanced the Shadowbox product offering, accelerating implementation time and automating field matching.

2021-2022

Looking to the future

While we are excited about every new customer, every new solution, and every new use case because we know we are helping clinicians focus on delivering quality care to patients by eliminating manual processes and clunky tech, we know we are just getting started. Ultimately, we see Shadowbox embedded in every clinic’s electronic health record to be used by the clinician to instantly solve any “last-mile” configuration between their clinic and any ancillary service provider.

We see Shadowbox as a platform that will save lives by making patient information easy to access and safe to share, no matter where it resides.
